Harlan Coben’s 2010 book Caught is strongly recommended by The Slicer. It’s another novel that keeps you guessing about guilt or innocence, and covers journalistic enthusiasm/deception; insistent pursuit of The Truth; former college room-mates, a missing child; scandal, and the importance of reputation; accusers; enticement/entrapment; execution of an adult; assertion that “when you’re dead, you’re dead,” and how that affects behaviour; things not being how they seem, a missing body, atonement, release from guilt, release from the past, a female witness, the F-word (not the one you’re thinking of), whether death is an illusion, and the possibility of a new life. Get it.
If you're wanting a pointer to on-theme music, the title of U2's "Stuck in a moment you can't get out of" certainly has the measure of the book, but the song lyrics themselves don't really fit. Closer to the subject matter is a number by Over The Rhine:
