It's recently been pointed out to me (thanks David!) that I should've been paying more attention than I have done to some new young talent. They played Glastonbury fergoodnesssake! And how did I miss them on Jools? Catchy pop with some strong guitar, and average age about 16 to boot. They've been billed as being mod revival, and I can certainly hear some Paul Weller influence in there, but in fairness, they remind me more of a blend of Beatles, Ramones & a big slab of Dr Feelgood R&B - lots of catchy hooks and lyrics.
Here's their cover of a 60s Willie Dixon/Bo Diddley tune:
Oh... nearly forgot to mention they're from Ireland... (and managed to stay out of Louis Walsh's hands ;-P)
Of course, avoiding judgment doesn't mean we shouldn't use discernment. I discern (even if not as quickly as Paul Weller, Jeff Beck, Elton John, Dave Grohl & Noel Gallagher) that they're a pretty fine band, with a stunning future ahead.
"You can't judge an apple by looking at a tree
You can't judge honey by looking at the bee
You can't judge a daughter by looking at the mother
You can't judge a book by looking at the cover...
You can't judge sugar by looking at the cane
You can't judge a woman by looking at her man
You can't judge a sister by looking at her brother
You can't judge a book by looking at the cover...
You can't judge a fish by lookin' in the pond
You can't judge right from looking at the wrong
You can't judge one by looking at the other
You can't judge a book by looking at the cover...
Oh, come on in closer, baby
Hear what else I gotta say
You got your radio turned down too low
Turn it up, oh."
That's my recommendation too - best played very loud. TURN IT UP!
